What Do I Wear for a Massage?

Need a break from the mundane? A massage poses several benefits to your overall well-being given its ability to help you unwind and relax after a long day.

If you're new to massage, you may be wondering what to expect and what to wear. Dressing appropriately can help you have a more comfortable experience.

Here's a look at some of your options for what to wear for a massage.

    Remain Fully Clothed

Feeling modest? You'll be happy to know that you can head to your massage fully clothed.

If you opt for this route, consider the clothes you want to wear and what might or might not work. It's best to leave heavy fabrics, such as denim or wool, at home and choose lighter clothes that are thin and form-fitting. Some suitable options include t-shirts, tank tops, shorts or sports bras.

Even if you prefer to cover up, make sure you've considered the limitations placed on your massage therapist.

While you can still get a massage fully clothed, your massage therapist won't be able to work on your body as best as they can since they're not in direct contact with your skin and muscles. It also means you may get some unwanted massage lotion on your clothes.

    Wear Your Underwear

Many massage goers opt for the underwear option, leaving them more exposed but not completely bare. The point of your massage is to help you relax, so make sure you're comfortable stripping down to your undergarments.

While it's not as limiting as being fully clothed, your bra straps or underwear bands may become a nuisance for your massage therapist if they cover any muscles they want to reach. If you're comfortable with the idea, tuck your bra straps and band underneath you during the massage.

    Go Fully Nude

If you're comfortable going nude, this option is typically preferred by massage therapists. This lets them work on your muscles without getting interrupted by bra straps or other clothing garments.

Bear in mind that your private areas won't be exposed; the therapist will leave the room while you undress and get underneath the sheet on the table. Once the massage is over, the therapist will leave the room again so you can get dressed.

Speak up If You Feel Uncomfortable

No matter what you wear, it's important to say something if you're feeling uncomfortable.

Don't be afraid to speak up if your therapist is applying too much, or too little, pressure. That gives them the opportunity to adjust their technique.

Still afraid to say something? Remind yourself that you're paying them for their services and that they're there to help you.

Communicating your concerns during these circumstances is the only way to make sure you're getting what you paid for. Make sure you leave the experience feeling relaxed and carefree.
