Looking for a nutritious snack your kids will actually love? These baked sweet potato bites are the perfect blend of healthy, easy to make and delicious—ideal for after-school munchies or lunchbox treats!

Sweet Potato vs. Yam: What’s the Difference?

You’ve probably heard sweet potatoes called “yams,” but they’re not the same! True yams are native to Africa and Asia and rarely found in US grocery stores. What we call “yams” here are actually sweet potatoes—root vegetables native to South America, available in two types: firm and white, or moist and orange.

Why Sweet Potatoes Are a Nutritional Superstar

Sweet potatoes are packed with:

  • Beta-carotene (hello, orange glow!)

  • Vitamins A, B6 and C

  • Calcium, iron, potassium and fiber

Unlike white potatoes, sweet potatoes may help stabilize blood sugar levels, making them a smart choice for low-carb diets like Atkins or South Beach.

How to Choose and Store Sweet Potatoes

  • Look for clean, plump, smooth roots.

  • Store in a cool, dry place (55°–65°F)—never refrigerate!

  • Use within 1–2 weeks for best flavor and texture.

Pro Tip: Use a stainless steel knife to prevent discoloration, and metal skewers for faster cooking if making kebobs.
