A breast cancer survivor and a pit bull form a special bond.
“If I had never gotten cancer, would I ever have gotten Stella?”
It’s the question that Marika Meeks asks near the beginning of her book, Incredibull Stella: How the Love of a Pit Bull Rescued a Family (Citadel/Kensington, coauthored with Elizabeth Ridley).
This question goes to the heart of Meeks’ story, that of a busy entrepreneur, wife, and mother whose stage 3 breast cancer diagnosis throws her life into chaos. Though at great cost, cancer “made me vulnerable to great love”—which is what she finds in fellow survivor Stella, an abandoned pitbull puppy.
Incredibull Stella tells how Stella helps not only to revitalize Meeks and her family but also to give Meeks a new direction in life: that of a dog rescue organizer through Stella’s Rescue Rehab. Stella is now a social media star advocating for pit bull awareness, and, as Meeks writes, “one amazing dog.”
